Engineers help to expand Mohawk College

Read Jones Christoffersen was the structural engineer for new facilities at the Mohawk College STARRT Institute in Stoney Creek, Hamilton, Ontario. The major building expansion was officially opened on October 6. <br>
Architects were Diamond and Schmitt, and mechanical and electrical engineer was MCW. Stantec was civil engineer, and Trow was geotechnical engineer. Code consultant was LMDG and construction manager was Atlas Corporation.<br>
The college trains apprentices in the trades, including in the building and construction sciences, and the mechanical and electrical engineering fields. <br>
Over 3,500 apprentices will be able to graduate every year now that the facilities have been expanded, amounting to 88,000 square feet of instructional space. A new east wing houses a resources centre and student services facilities, all opening onto a large atrium. A new west wing has machine shops and laboratories, and the 14,000-sq. ft. ArcelorMittal Dofasco Enterprise Centre is for training and research. The existing main campus building was also upgraded. A final phase for the college’s expansion is the Gerald Marshall Transportation Centre which is still under construction. <br>
