The United Nations Environment Program has chosen Lebanon to host this year’s World Environment Day on June 5th. This will be the first time in the 30-year history of the event that the main celebrations will be held in the Arab world.
The theme of the day this year is “Water — Two Billion People are Dying for It!” A U.N. press releases says water is “one of the most pressing environmental issues facing the planet and its six billion citizens.” The theme also supports the celebration of 2003 as the International Year of Freshwater.
