A new proposed standard for doing energy audits has been issued by ASHRAE/ACCA. Standard 211P, Standard for Commercial Building Energy Audits is open for public comment until September 19.
The standard defines the procedures required to perform ASHRAE Level 1, 2 and 3 energy audits and provides a common scope of work. It also establishes standardized industry practices and minimum reporting requirements for the results.
An initial advisory public review (non-ANSI) held last year drew more than 600 comments from some 100 people. As a result of that review the proposed standard was expanded to include multi-family residential buildings along with other changes.
ASHRAE first addressed audits in 2004 with its publication Procedures for Commercial Building Energy Audits.

Rocky Mountain Institute has published a new report: “An Integrative Business Model for Net Zero Energy Districts.” While net-zero energy buildings are gaining momentum, now net-zero districts are starting to be contemplated, such as at Fort Collins’s Fort ZED, Arizona State University, and UC Davis’s West Village. The RMI report presents an innovative business model for developing these districts and details how pursuing net zero energy is not a cost, but rather a significant value driver.

The Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (CPCI) has announced that two consulting engineering companies have been selected as recipients of the CPCI Engineering Excellence Awards. Read Jones Christoffersen Consulting Engineers’ Calgary Office and Stantec’s Calgary Office will receive the CPCI Engineering Excellence Award in October. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to the Canadian precast prestressed concrete industry and will be presented at the CPCI annual meeting in Banff. In addition, the Roy Willwerth Precast Concrete Architectural Recognition Award is going to Gibbs Gate Architects and Group2 Architecture Interior Design. The CPCI Real Estate Development Award of Excellence goes to Remington Development Corporation and Centron Real Estate Development & Construction. The award winners were selected by CPCI staff, the CPCI chairman of the board and CPCI Alberta Chapter members.
CPCI has also recently signed a collaborative agreement with the National Precast Concrete Association of the U.S. Each organization will list the other as an affiliate member and under the agreement CPCI will be an endorsing partner of The Precast Show in Cleveland, Ohio.
CPCI is also offering an annual scholarship program for students in civil engineering and civil technology. The $1,500 scholarship is open to students enrolled in their final year of studies. To apply, e-mail info@cpci.ca
NRCan’s Dollars to $ense training workshops are to be delivered by the Canadian Institute for Energy Training (CIET) from now on. CIET has been appointed as the sole license for delivering the workshops whose different modules include energy management planning, monitoring, recommissioning, and energy efficiency financing. The CIET training team consists of Prism Engineering, TDS Dixon, Système Énergie TST and Enerscan Consultants.
