Quebec consulting engineers scored major victories in the ASHRAE Technology Awards announced last week.
Pageau Morel and Associates’ design for the Mountain Equipment Co-op store in the Marche Central Metropolitain of Montreal won the ASHRAE Award of Engineering Excellence. The Award of Engineering Excellence goes to the most outstanding project receiving a technology award. Frederic Genest, ing. led the team at Pageau Morel.
Their building has a geo-exchange system with ground-source hat pumps, radiant slabs for heating and cooling, a combination hybrid ventilation system, and thermal energy storage with night pre-cooling and heating. (Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine published an article on the building in December 2004.)
The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers — ASHRAE — is the pre-eminent North American association for the heating and ventilating industry, with 55,000 members. It gave out its annual awards at the 2005 Winter Meeeting held February 5-9 in Orlando, Florida.
Another Montreal building by Pageau Morel — Concordia University Science Complex — won first place in the new institutional buildings category. Nicolas Lemire, ing. is the project engineer. It includes 250 fume hoods designed to achieve 45 per cent energy savings over the Model National Energy Code of Canada reference standard for buildings.
Also, another consulting firm from the Montreal area, Dessau-Soprin, received first place in the existing institutional buildings category for the Jean-de-Brebeuf College in Montreal. Gilles Desmarais was the project engineer. The college has a composite heating plant through the use of a direct contact water heater and a flooded vertical exchange.
Three Canadians were made Fellows of ASHRAE at the annual meeting, two from the above firms. They are Roland Charneux, chief operating officer of Pageau Morel and Associates of Montreal; Laurier Nichols, PE., section head, energy efficiency of Dessau-Soprin, Longueuil, Quebec, and Glenn D. Schuyler, P.Eng., vice president with Rowan Williams Davies and Irwin of Guelph, Ontario.
Congratulations to all!
