Dillon Consulting has been facilitating public consultations in remote and northern Manitoba on behalf of the Manitoba Government. The province is seeking input from communities in remote and northern areas on how to enhance their transportation access. Currently there are 37 remote communities lacking all-weather road access, which means they have to rely on various combinations of air, marine, rail and winter road services. Preliminary studies show that this dependence results in significantly higher transportation costs, translating into a higher cost of living and lower quality of life and health.
The consultations, held in early March, focused on the performance of existing transportation systems and identifying the need for, and potential cost savings and economic development opportunities of, building all-weather roads.
