The Athena Sustainable Materials Institute, a non-profit research organization based in Canada, has released a web version of its free life cycle assessment (LCA) tool for designing roadways.

Pavement LCA is a tool for transportation engineers and designers to enable them to calculate and compare the environmental impact of designs. It provides the environmental impact results for all life cycle stages — materials manufacturing, roadway construction — over a range of lifespans.

The Athena Sustainable Materials Institute provides the tool for free thanks to the support of the Cement Association of Canada and its other members.

The Institute also develops lifecycle assessment tools for building design. Most recently it has collaborated with Morrison Hershfield, consulting engineers based in Toronto to develop and distribute the latest version of its Impact Estimator for Buildings – Version 4.
