After much deliberation and media speculation, Ontario Power Generation has announced that the Darlington Nuclear Plant along Lake Ontario, east of Oshawa near Toronto will be the site of two new nuclear reactors.
With the additional 3,200 MW from the new reactors, the province is hoping to maintain a total nuclear generation capacity of 14,000 MW.
Three companies are vying to build the new plant, local contender Atomic Energy of Canada, Areva of France, and Westinghouse of the U.S.
Engineering and construction of the new plant at Darlington will require an enormous number of people – 3,500 people is the estimate.
The area has been hard hit by job losses in the automobile industry, so politicians are hailing the government’s decision with delight.
The goal is for construction to begin in 2012.
