In an effort to have more construction trades, contractors and building operators educated in green building practices the Canada Green Building Council has teamed up with Urban Green Council, the New York Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, to offer training courses and certification exams.

Thomas Mueller, president and chief executive officer of CaGBC, said they are introducing Green Professional Building Skills Training (GPRO) “to meet the demand for trained construction professionals [who] are knowledgeable and skilled to deliver top quality buildings in the growing green building industry.”

The GPRO program was developed by the Urban Green Council to provide “trade-specific knowledge.” It has been in existence since 2011 and 8,000 people have participated so far.

While the Toronto chapter of CaGBC has been offering GPRO courses for a year, the CaGBC will roll out the first round of national training for Canada this fall.  The CaGBC website lists the training areas as: green building basics, construction management, operations and maintenance essentials, electrical systems, plumbing systems, mechanical and HVAC&R.

Ellen Honingstock of the Urban Green Council said they were proud to partner with CaGBC on training. “Now GPRO green building training for contractors, trades and building operators will be available coast to coast throughout all of North America…. [We} are excited to cultivate industry relationships established in the U.S. with our brothers and sisters to the North.”
