Contract for 3,800 federal government buildings goes to Brookfield Johnson Controls

Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) has awarded six contracts for the operation and management of federal 3,800 buildings and facilities. Brookfield Johnson Controls Canada of Markham, Ontario a joint venture, won the contract which totals 8 million square metres of space.

The contracts not only cover operations and management, but also project delivery services for construction projects up to $1 million. These could be for new construction, improvements and building systems.

Initially set for a period of up to eight years at a maximum of $9.6 billion, the contracts have an option to be extended for a further six years for a total of $22.8 billion.

By outsourcing these services the federal government expects to save at least $20 million a year. In a statement the government said that based on past contracts, it has saved $700 million since it began using the private sector to deliver real property services across the country.

The competition for the contract was posted on the government electronic tendering service from October 2013 to January 2014.

Brookfield Johnson Controls’ website says the two “world-class” organizations (Brookfield is a property developer and manager, Johnson Controls is a building systems manufacturer) have been cooperating on integrated facilities management since 1992.
