Hatch separates from Mott MacDonald

The well known, award-winning consulting engineering firm known as Hatch Mott MacDonald is to be split into two distinct businesses.

Hatch and Mott MacDonald have decided to separate after a 20 year joint venture. The company known as Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) will become two distinct businesses. The Canadian business will become part of Hatch, while the U.S. business will become part of Mott MacDonald.

HMM’s pipelines business, which operates in both Canada and the U.S., will also join Mott MacDonald.

Hatch Mott MacDonald was created 20 years ago as a joint venture providing engineering and professional services in North America. Known especially for award-winning tunnelling and transportation projects, HMM also works in water and wastewater, and oil and gas pipelines markets. It has 3,000 staff and 77 offices throughout the U.S. and Canada.

After the separation, expected to conclude in early 2016, both Hatch and Mott MacDonald will continue to operate in all sectors throughout North America. Both companies are employee-owned.

Keith Howells and John Bianchini,  chief executive officers of Mott MacDonald and Hatch respectively, said in an announcement,  “At a time of significant renewal in North American infrastructure, this change allows Hatch and Mott MacDonald and the staff of HMM to build and invest in new ways.”

Nick DeNichilo, Hatch Mott MacDonald’s chief executive officer, will continue to lead the Hatch Mott MacDonald business until the separation is concluded.  At that point, DeNichilo will become president and chief executive officer of Mott MacDonald.

Hatch Infrastructure in North America will be led by Michael Schatz, managing director of infrastructure. The arrangements are expected to be finalized by early 2016.

Among its many large infrastructure projects, Hatch Mott MacDonald is providing detailed design and construction management services for the tunnels in the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown subway project in Toronto. And earlier this year HMM was contracted to design the tunnel for the new Scarborough subway in the city’s east.

Hatch and Hatch Mott MacDonald jointly won the Outreach Award recently in the 2015 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards for their community and environmental company activities.  Click here.
