UL opens new building envelope test facility in Toronto

UL,  the company recognized for this certification standard, is expanding its services for the building envelope and building sciences market with the opening of its newest facility in Toronto.

UL CLEB is a Canadian building science and building envelope service provider, delivering building envelope testing services, building forensic services, field testing and building envelope commissioning services for architects, building owners, manufacturers and installers in the building construction markets across North America.

UL acquired Montreal-based CLEB in May 2017. The Toronto facility can accommodate all forms of building envelope assemblies, and it contains both a fenestration lab and a mock-up lab that can test full scale window wall, curtain wall and wall assemblies. Both labs are located at UL’s laboratory on Underwriters Rd. in Toronto.

The mock-up lab is located indoors in a 7,200 sq. ft. facility equipped with a 50-ton overhead crane and can test to a maximum sample size of 40 feet high. It’s among the largest indoor facilities in Canada.

“The expansion of our building envelope services in Toronto provides the construction industry throughout Ontario with access to an organization that is known worldwide for advancing building science. We are excited to offer our services to one of the most active construction markets in the world,” said Joe Hosey, general manager for Canada at UL, in a company release.

In addition to the new Toronto lab, UL has building science test facilities in Montreal and Chicago.
