AMEC and AECOM asked to examine flood mitigation strategies in Alberta

Engineering consultants AMEC and AECOM have been hired by the Government of Alberta to examine the feasibility of proposed flood reduction projects. The firms will be assessing projects and their impacts on watersheds and future floods, looking at things like structure types, locations, impacts on property values, relocation of utilities, etc. Public consultation will be a key part of the process, and eventually the government will use the findings to help shape its future policies for flood mitigation.

Doug Griffiths, Minister of Municipal Affairs, said: “We know it is impossible to prevent floods from happening; however there’s a lot we can do to lessen the impact these events have on Alberta’s communities. This is a next step in our ongoing work to find the best ways to protect Albertans when flood waters threaten our homes in the future.”
