Work Updates – Consulting engineers take on energy and transportation projects

Stantec has been contracted to provide services for the new Samsung Grand Renewable Energy Park in Haldimand County, Ontario. The park will be the world’s largest energy cluster combining wind and solar power, designed to generate 2,500 megawatts of power. It will include a 100-MW solar park of 400,000 interconnected solar-PV panels, and a 140-MW wind farm. Stantec’s team will provide various permitting and approvals, surveying and preliminary engineering services.
Delcan has won a contract with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to provide Owner’s engineering services for the East Extension of Highway 407 in Durham, northeast of Toronto. Delcan’s work includes helping the Ministry prepare and review documentation on procurement, pre-design and detailed design review. The extension to the 407 toll highway that was built during the late 1990s across the top of Toronto will take it from Brock Road in Pickering to Simcoe Street in Oshawa, and eventually out to Highway 35/115 in Clarington to the east — a distance of about 40 kilometres. There are also plans to build two south extensions to Highway 401, one in Whitby and one in Clarington. In June, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment approved with conditions the environmental assessment (prepared by AECOM) , and a request for qualifications for project teams for a first phase was issued on June 9.
AECOM is lead designer in a joint venture to construct a major new ring road around Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Circle Drive South is the largest single construction project in the city’s history and will be the province’s first design-build transportation project. It has a value of US $277 million. The road will include a new bridge across the South Saskatchewan River, over four miles of four and six-lane divided highway, four interchanges and four railway grade separations. AECOM is also providing rail, stormwater, environmental site remediation and sound attenuation services.
SNC-Lavalin has an engineering and procurement contract with Grizzly Oil Sands for its new Algar Lake Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) facility near Fort McMurray, Alberta. the project includes a central processing facility, tank farm and 8-MW cogeneration facility. Detailed design is expected to be completed in 2011. The work is being carried out by SNC-Lavalin’s Calgary office.
