Major construction is set to begin this month on the $1.4 billion Evergreen Line, Vancouver’s latest skytrain project. The “EGRT Construction” consortium led by SNC-Lavalin was formally awarded the contract to design, build and finance the advanced light rapid transit project at the end of January. The new line, which will be automated, is scheduled to open in the summer of 2016.
With a construction cost estimated at almost $890 million, the new line connects suburban hubs south of Vancouver. It will run between Burnaby’s existing Lougheed Station on the Millennium line, going east and north through Port Moody, and ending at Coquitlam . In total the line measures 11 kilometres and involves seven stations. While much of the track is above or at grade, it includes a 2-kilometre tunnel between Burquitlam Station and Port Moody.
The EGRT consortium includes SNC-Lavalin and two of its construction companies, Graham Building Services, International Bridge Technologies, Jacobs, Rizzani de Eccher, S.E.L.I., and MMM Group.
The EGRT consortium will build the elevated and at-grade guideways, a two-kilometre tunnel, seven stations, power substations, train operating systems and parking facilities, as well as a vehicle-storage and light maintenance facility.
Three consortium were shortlisted for the project were EL Partners, Kiewit/Flatiron, and SNC-Lavalin. The project won environmental approval in February 2011.
