Siberia stadium is largest frameless steel building in world

Manitoba company Behlen fabricated the structure for a soccer stadium in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia that is the largest frameless steel building in the world.

The stadium holds a FIFA-certified international sized soccer field and bleachers. Its overall size is 120 m long x 115 m wide, consisting of a four-storey administration and commercial area and the soccer arena of 120 m x 80 m, which has a clear ceiling height of 23 m.

Owned by the “Enisey” soccer club, the stadium hosted its first game on November 8, attended by more than 3,000 people.

Because the building is constructed using an engineered panel system, there is no need for structural steel. The building’s convex style roof helps provide the necessary rigidity.

Galvanized steel is used throughout for sidewall panels (14ga), end walls (18ga), roof 13ga; the ceiling is a mix of 13 and 14ga. The largest roof and ceiling panels had a rolled dimension of approximately 1 m x 10 m. .

The building components were manufactured in Brandon, Manitoba over a four-month period and then shipped to Siberia in 63 containers. The project took a year-and-a-half from first negotiations to final delivery.

Mezhregionalnaya Torgovaya Assotsiatsia was the general contractor which erected the structure in Siberia.

ArcelorMittalDofasco supplied the steel itself and conducted diaphragm shear testing on the panels.
