Port Mann, Highway 1 improvements win top award in B.C.

The Association of Consulting Engineering Companies British Columbia (ACEC-BC) handed out its annual awards at a gala dinner held Saturday night April 12, at the Vancouver Convention Centre West.

Guests dressed in 1940s attire for the theme, “Swing into Spring,” and in attendance were the Hon. Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, the Hon. Stephanie Cadieux, Minister of Children and Family Development, and the Hon. Linda Reid, Speaker of the BC Legislature.

Keith Sashaw, president and chief executive officer of ACEC-BC, said: “This year’s winners represent the best and brightest that our industry has to offer, and are a testament to the amazing work of B.C.’s consulting engineers that we have been showcasing on this stage for 25 years.”

The premier award for a project, the Lieuenant Governor’s Award for Engineering Excellence, went to H5M, a joint venture of Hatch Mott MacDonald and MMM Group, for their onshore works on the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project. Part of the Trans-Canada Highway between Vancouver and Langley, the corridor is Metro Vancouver’s busiest transportation route.

Sashaw noted that the H5M team implemented a number of technical “firsts” for such a large project, “such as developing the majority of the highway design using 3D modelling and building information management methodologies.”

The 2014 prestigious Meritorious Achievement Award for an individual went to Brian Johnson, P. Eng. Johnson recently retired from Stantec after 30 years, 20 of which he served as vice president, British Columbia where he oversaw the growth of the company to over 800 staff and revenues in excess of $100 million. The association noted that he has also contributed significantly to industry groups and community associations over the years and is “a friend and mentor to countless professional engineers in the province.”

The Young Professional Award was given to Allison Clavelle, P.Eng., of Urban Systems. She has played significant roles on major transportation projects and has served two terms as chair of ACEC-BC’s Young Professionals Group.

Below is a list of the award-winning projects and their consulting engineers. There are a total of six awards of excellence and eight awards of merit, given in six categories.
