Excelsior Engineering of Calgary has been selected by Field Upgrading to do engineering, procurement and construction management for an innovative pilot facility that aims to commercialize a technology to improve the economics of upgrading Alberta’s bitumen. In 2012, Excelsior Engineering joined with Vepica Grupo Internacional, a multinational engineering and construction company based in Spain.

IBI Group of Toronto, a global architecture, engineering, planning and technology firm based in Toronto, is collaborating with the Alberta Motor Association and GreenOwl Mobile on a new mobile application that will support personalized road condition and audible traffic reports. The app, named Road Reporter, will launch later this year. It can also be used to send reports back to the AMA.

Aercoustics Engineering of Toronto, which specializes in acoustic design, noise and vibration control, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. To mark the occasion it launched a new logo at an anniversary party at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, the former site of the famous Maple Leaf Gardens. From beginnings as four employees crammed in the front room of a house, the award-winning company has grown to a staff of 30 employees in its Toronto office.

Lion One Metals has appointed engineering firm Knight Piésold of Vancouver, B.C. and Perth, Australia, to carry out detailed geotechnical, environmental, and engineering design work at the Tuvatu Gold Project on the island of Viti Levu in Fiji. Knight Piésold will be assisted by Entec, a Fiji-based geotechnical engineering company. The scope of work includes the tailings storage facility, waste water management, geotechnical design of the plant site foundations, underground mine hydrogeology and quality assurance monitoring. Knight Piésold designed the tailings management facility for Fiji’s largest gold mine in the 1980s.

Hatch Mott MacDonald has announced two executive appointments. Norris Harvey, PE is now practice leader of the company’s fire and life safety practice. He is an international expert in the field of tunnel ventilation and life safety and will be based in HMM’s New York City office. He joined the company over a year ago. Patrick Natale has joined HMM as vice president – business strategies, beginning in January 2015. He is a former executive director of the American Society of Civil Engineers (2002-2014). Before that he was in the same role at the National Society of Professional Engineers in the U.S.
