André-Benoit Allard, ing., of Ecosystem, Montreal has been awarded first place in the existing public assembly category in the 2013 Technology Awards from ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers).

Allard won for retrofitting the Montreal Biodome's energy systems for Montreal Space for Life. Ecosystem were the mechanical-electrical engineers for the retrofit.

The Biodome replicates five different ecosystems from the Americas under one roof, with greatly varying conditions of temperature, humidity and light. Since the retrofit completed in 2010, the building has seen 55% energy savings and an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Canadian Consulting Engineer featured the project in August-September 2010, p. 26.
