Canadian Consulting Engineer

StructureCraft Builders Inc.

Job Title

Lead Structural Engineer (Timber)

About Us

We work with clients and architects to design, fabricate and erect carefully detailed building and bridge structures in timber, steel, glass, concrete and other materials. As both structural engineers and craftsmen, we enjoy challenges which break new ground in sophistication and quality, and our extensive experience with wood has won numerous awards for innovation in timber construction. Our business operates out of a 25,000 sqft shop located in Delta, BC.

New and challenging design concepts, materials and construction methods are what we thrive on – we enjoy pushing the boundaries in complex geometry, digital fabrication and in material testing and research, and our work in this regard has been recognised internationally.

Job Description

The engineering team plays a key role in our organization, responsible for creating efficient and practical designs, working with both external clients and our own detailing and project management teams.  Shop floor and site teams rely on our engineers for designs which are efficient to fabricate and erect.  Our engineers use the latest in FEM software (RFEM) and parametric design tools (Grasshopper) to analyse the complex structures we are often involved in.

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing and directing daily engineering requirements (including concept design, static and dynamic hand calculations, finite element modelling, sketches, and drawings) with respect to the pre-construction and construction phases of each project
  • Supervising the work of junior engineers, drafters, architects, designers, general contractors, technicians, assembly and fabrication teams
  • Liaising with internal project management, shop, and site teams to ensure projects are delivered on time and budget and meet fabrication and erection constraints
  • Providing engineering reports to clients and structural advice on the construction and design of projects and devising modifications as necessary
  • Inspecting project sites to monitor progress in accordance with projected timelines and safety standards and inspecting materials as necessary to ensure adequacy
  • Reviewing project requirements to provide estimates of quantities and costs of materials, equipment and labor and input to design and engineering budgets
  • Ability to present and communicate clearly at conferences, lunch & learns, and seminars

This is a permanent, 40h/week position at our offices in Delta, with a starting wage of $73,000 per year.  Merit bonuses are given in profitable years, and are intended as a strong incentive to production, rewarding loyalty and contribution to the firm.  The company benefits plan includes MSP, long term disability and extended health and dental benefits.
