Ellis Don and PCL short-listed to build Vancouver’s new St. Paul’s Hospital

Providence Health Care has short-listed qualified teams from Ellis Don and PCL for the next stage of a competition to design, build and partially finance the new St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver (rendering pictured).
Ellis Don’s team includes Parkin Architects Western, Kaslan Architecture Interior Design and Planning, Dialog Design and Ellis Don’s own design-build department. The PCL team includes HDR Architecture Associates, Stantec Architecture and PCL’s west-coast constructors.
The two teams have been invited to participate in the request for proposals (RFP) stage of the selection process. The successful proponent will be identified through a merit-based evaluation, which should be initiated shortly and completed in late 2020, after which point construction can begin.
“Selecting the people who will eventually design and construct the new hospital is a key milestone,” says Adrian Dix, British Columbia’s minister of health. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a new, integrated health campus from the ground up.”
The provincial government approved the project’s business plan in February. The new campus, to be constructed at 1002 Station Street in Vancouver’s False Creek Flats, will provide capacity for up to 548 beds, including 115 net new beds. The site is currently undergoing a rezoning process with Vancouver’s municipal government, which is expected to be completed this fall.
Providence also plans to add other phases to the campus, including a clinical services and research centre and a health innovation park with industry partners.
