Calgary adopts Hatch Mott MacDonald’s scheme to expand LRT

Calgary City Council has approved Hatch Mott MacDonald’s recommendations for the city’s new West Light Rail Transit project. The recommended scheme will be a design-build contract to include all the major civil works, track work and stations. Signals and systems are also included. 

As owner’s engineer on the project, Hatch Mott MacDonald will also be project manager. The subconsultants include architects GEC and Focus corporation.

The West LRT will extend the city’s C-Train system by eight kilometres. It will include a 2.4 kilometre elevated guideway, 1.4 kilometre tunnel and six stations.

Nathan Higgins, vice president of Hatch Mott MacDonald, said, “HMM Is keenly aware of the public need for this transit system and has worked diligently to advance the project in a socially responsible manner with careful attention to [the] timeline.”

The company says an RFP will be issued this year, with the intent to see the project completed by 2012. The proponent has to provide an option for an alternate alignment to reduce the socio-economic impacts on the community.
