After four years of consultation with stakeholders and Aboriginal leaders, Ontario’s Mining Act has been amended and “modernized.” The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines has announced that the new rules, which take effect November 1, will provide better protection for Aboriginal cultural sites. The rules impose a system of exploration plans and permits to ensure that Aboriginal communities and private landowners are adequately notified of any proposed mineral exploration.
