Engineers’ skills at work in B.C. Wood Design Awards

Winners in the British Columbia section of Wood WORKS! BC were presented in Vancouver by the Canadian Wood Council last week.

Fast + Epp won the Engineer Award based on their innovative work on a 50,000 square foot replacement of the existing Samuel Brighouse Elementary School in Richmond. The announcement cited Fast + Epp as “a firm that went the extra mile to prove that it is possible to use wood in order to provide public buildings that are cost effective, architecturally expressive and engaging, while adhering to a strict budget.”

The Architect Award went to Sean Barrington Pearson for two projects: the RUFproject (Rural Urban Fantasy Project) at the Gulf Island Residence on Salt Spring Island, and the Football Training Centre in Soweto, South Africa. The structural engineer was Parallel Consulting.

Read Jones Christoffersen’s C.C. Yao won the residential wood design category award for the Linear House on Salt Spring Island.

Other award winners included: Checkwitch Poiron Architects (Herold Engineering, structural engineer) for the Nanaimo Cruise Ship Terminal Building; Chow Low Hammond Architects (RJC, structural engineer) for Camas Gardens Supportive Housing, Victoria; Bates Engineering and Martin Hagarty Architect for the Courtenay City Hall Renovation; Warner James Architects (Applied Engineering Solutions, structural engineer) for Art’s Place Food Services Outlet; Hughes Condon Marler Architects (Fast + Epp, structural engineers) for the Steveston Fire Hall, Richmond, and McFarland Marceau Architects (Equilibrium, structural engineers) for the École au Coeur de l’Ile Comox.
