Technologists’ salaries 20% above the norm

Engineering and science technologists have enjoyed strong employment growth for the past 15 years, according to a report from the Conference Board of Canada.
The report, “Assessing the Economic Contribution of Canada’s Engineering and Applied Science Technicians and Technologists,” released in April, found that the average weekly salary rate for the profession has been more than 20% above the national average since 1997.
The group contributed $54.7 billion to the national economy in one year, in 2011, which was 3.3% of gross domestic product.
The technicians and technologists covered in the report are a diverse group who work in many sectors, including manufacturing, public administration, mining, oil and gas, as well as construction.
Technology Professionals Canada funded and supported the report, which was written by Julie Adès.
John Leech, chief executive officer of Applied Science Technologist and Technicians of British Columbia said in a release, “Technology professionals are crucial to BC’s economic growth, contributing an estimated $6 billion to the provincial economy, and a vital aspect of development, enhancing our innovation agenda and improving productivity.”
Pedro Antunes, deputy chief economist at the Conference Board of Canada, noted that “To sustain economic growth in light of slowing labour force growth, Canadian businesses need to focus on improving productivity and competitiveness. This means that demand for this occupational group will continue to grow in coming years.”
