Kingston was selected to become SNC Lavalin's centre of excellence for systems engineering to support existing and future major rail and transit projects in the region.

SNC-Lavalin is opening a new office in Kingston, Ontario as part of the company’s infrastructure division.

Announced on the company’s blog, the new space, located at 31 Hyperion Court, will accommodate rail and transit engineering, construction, and geotechnical environmental management (GEM) teams.

According to a report on TheWhig.com, SNC Lavalin has signed the lease and expects to be running by September.

“We are excited to be opening an even larger office than initially announced,” said Kevin George, vice president, rail and transit engineering North America. “Kingston was selected to become our centre of excellence for systems engineering to support our existing and future major rail and transit projects in the region. As well as being a great place to live, Kingston is ideally located to support growing rail and transit projects in Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal. The new office will open with approximately 10 employees, with further expansion on the horizon. We are pleased that our original plan to occupy space for 20 employees has now doubled.”

The announcement also cites Kingston as a strategic location for SNC-Lavalin because of its recruitment opportunities with Queen’s University.

SNC-Lavalin is supporting the Queen’s Hyperloop Design team, whose mandate is to develop a functional Hyperloop prototype.

SNC-Lavalin’s announcement will bring new rail and  transit job opportunities to the Kingston area, with numerous open positions expected this year. Supporting the Kingston community is important to the company, which recently joined the Kingston Chamber of Commerce.

Bill Williams, Kingston office manager, says in the blog post:  “I look forward to establishing a Systems Engineering centre of excellence to expand the SNC-Lavalin Rail & Transit Engineering product offering in the region from transport advisory services to systems design for major projects. We are interested to hear from rail and transit professionals based in Kingston and the surrounding areas. The office will support  Systems Engineering, Systems Integration, Design Management and Project Management, as well as other disciplines.”
