Environmental groups Ontario Nature and Ecojustice (formerly the Sierra Legal Defence Fund) have launched a private prosecution against the building managers of a large office complex on the outskirts of Toronto.
The three Consilium Place towers, located on Highway 401 and McCowan Road, are covered in mirrored glass, making them lethal to migratory birds. More than 800 birds were recovered from the lawns around the 17-storey complex in 2008-2009 and it is estimated that in the past decade 7,000 birds of 82 species have flown into the buildings.
The legal suite against building management company Menkes is being brought under the Environmental Protection Act and the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
