The United Nations has issued a “snapshot” of how access to broadband communications is proceeding in countries around the world. The report is the first produced by the UN Broadband Commission for Digital Development. It tracked the affordability of broadband access to the internet in 177 countries, and also how that internet access is helping to educate and promote new skills.

It found that while household internet access has grown over the past year, individual internet use lags behind.

The report also found that there is a strong linguistic shift taking place online. If current trends continue, the number of internet users accessing the web in the Chinese language are expected to overtake English language users by 2015.
