Instead of competing for clients, engineering and lighting designers got to challenge each other on the racetrack in Toronto. Lighting agency Salex held its sixth annual Salex Formula 1 Specifiers Challenge on November 11. The event was held at the Grand Prix Kartways, in Downsview, Toronto. The karts are Italian-made, high-performance electric vehicles that speed around the track at up to 85 kilometres an hour. The carts can be remotely controlled and shut off to avoid pile-ups.

Twelve teams competed, each with five drivers. Each race involved 14 circuits. There were three rounds: practice, qualifying and racing. Finally, the 10 fastest drivers of the night competed for the top individual prize.

First team place went to the combined team of E-Lumen and Arup. In second place were Hammerschlag and Joffe, and in third place was Stantec. Also competing were teams from Crossey, Smith and Andersen, Hidi Rae, HH Angus, Mulvey + Banani, and MCW.

Julia Ly of Mulvey + Banani won the fastest lap time, and the fastest individual driver was Brad Bell of Hammerschlag and Joffe.
